One of the possible causes for an increased likelihood of gambling problems may be associated with changes in human nature due to changes in the economic structure of the society over the last twenty years or so. This economic structure has resulted in less income at the top of the scale for most people and greater opportunities for the middle and lower class.
The research presented in this paper focuses on changes in human nature resulting from this sociological change and examines how this change may impact problem gamblers. Specifically, we examine how changes in perceived risk influence problematic gambling behavior. We next examine whether there is a relationship between problem gambling and changes in impulse control. Finally, we examine whether changes in human nature resulting from changes in the economic structure of society are correlated with changes in problem gambling. Our main results indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between problematic gambling and impulse control but not a relationship between problematic gambling and changes in impulse control.
There are many causes of gambling problems; indeed, the causes of gambling problems span the gamblers' lifetime. Many gamblers do not realize the extent to which they have alienated their friends and family by engaging in increasing amounts of risky gambling behavior. Most professionals agree that gambling problems can have damaging effects on relationships, but the impact is usually short lived. Problem gamblers typically develop a new gambling strategy and resolve their problems without serious damage to their relationships.
